Hi all (anyone?)

I've been abscent from this site for quite a while now. Both me and my girlfriend have been through a very rough time recently, due to our newly born daughter Elma's passing away at birth.

Needless to say, I haven't been hacking much on maemo due to this. And to top it off, I switched from Ubuntu 64-bits to 32-bits (no java plugin in 64-bits, many packages missing etc.), and in doing so, I forgot to backup the sources of the hildonized port of Buoh. So it's gone, and I haven't found the strength and time yet to redo it.

So there you have it, that's how my life's been for the past 6 months.

Anyway, I've been following the news coming from OSiM and the Maemo Summit recently, and I must say that it all sounds really promising. _Except_ for the fact that there's been no announcement yet from Nokia if the upcoming Fremantle (maemo 5) platform will support the N800 and N810 devices.

If they do drop them, then... Wow. My N810 is just 9 months old. Short lifespan, eh? Not that it would suddenly stop working or anything, but it just wouldn't be as _supported_ as any new device would be. But I guess it's just a matter of Nokia wanting to sell more devices, and not wanting users clinging on to "old" hardware when they can have shiny new bling-bling with exciting features.

And that's just how the world works. We'll see how it pans out. Here's one hoping for the best.

I just have to say.. Wow! This is amazing. Thank you Nokia.
This is probably the best news since me and my girlfriend found out that we're having a baby in March! I'm so excited about it. :-)

Now there's going to be some interesting development with e g. the GPS in mind.. Stay tuned!

Well, first, I have ported xdaliclock to the N800. It's a digital clock that "melts" the numbers into their new shape when they're changing, here's the package: xdaliclock_2.23-1_armel.deb. Sadly, fullscreen doesn't currently work, I will have to investigate a bit further into that...

Second, I have also been coding on a project of my own, a card engine for Maemo. There's just a demo UI for now but you can try it out if you like to: crazy-cards_0.1_armel.deb. I hope to release the source code soonish (after I've cleaned it up a bit and implemented some more features). The goal is to turn this into a Texas Hold'em game with support for playing against opponents over the internet but I can't make any promises that it will ever be done or when. At least releasing the source code would give others the opportunity to chip in and make contributions. We'll see what the future brings. :)

I don't know if these packages will work with the 770 and if they don't, I'm sorry. I built these in bora scratchbox and will build new ones for the 770 when I get that environment set up.

Annoyances

Reading Thomas Vander Stichele's post about the GPS navigation suite and the cover for the Nokia N800 got me thinking: I really miss that hardcover that was part of the Nokia 770. It was sturdy and I could slip the 770 into my pocket without worrying about the display. Sure, I use the pouch for the N800 to keep the display from getting *scratches*, but that ain't nearly the same thing. I really miss that hardcover. And when I dig deeper into my mind, I come across other things I miss too from the 770. Like the functional, separate audio and video players. On the 770, the audio player was bliss. On the N800, it's crap. That's all I have to say about it. Any audio player that won't let me create a custom playlist is absolutely sh*t. With the N800, the audio player is as good as the one on my cellphone (a Nokia 6280, I won't go into details with the problems with that one). And then comes the video player. On the N800, the videos recorded with my Nokia 6280 *lags*. That didn't happen with the 770. The settings for recording video on the Nokia 6280 is "Video clip quality = High" (whatever that means, Nokia doesn't exactly give you an overwhelming amount of information), and "Video resolution = 640 x 480". That shouldn't be too hard. Surely a bug that has something to do with Gstreamer on the N800. But since it was working perfectly on the 770, this is a real regression... Also, on the 770, when I was charging the battery and charging was done, it gave me this cute sound to tell me that I should pull the plug because it was fully charged. Not so on the N800. And on the 770, when I set the inactive time for WLAN connections to 10 minutes, it used to disconnect me after that amount of time. Again, this is not working on the N800. I stay connected for all eternity. And if you think I'm a complete moron that can't figure out how to configure something correctly, you're wrong.

Bottom point: I love the N800, it's a wonderful device with fantastic capabilities, and I use it everyday, even if I don't have to ;) But everytime I use it, I feel like something's missing. Please Nokia, fix the things I've mentioned above. Thanks in advance.

(And no, I won't file Bugzilla bugs. Surely the Nokia developers must use this device themselves?)

Yeah, so this is my first post since I moved barraza.se over to Blogger. I previously had it hosted at my home computer, but since I don't want the computer to be running 24/7 (and I'm too lazy to set up a dedicated server), I have moved it here.

I have not posted anything in quite a while, but writing about all the exciting things happening in my life right now will have to wait for another post...

Yippieeee, I got my Nokia 770 back from repairs one week ago, and it works fine. That is all.

Another one bites the dust

So, today it's exactly one month since I received my Nokia 770. And guess what? It bit the dust.

I was lying in my bed, happily surfing through wifi and reading "PalmSource has high hopes for Linux" (is that some kind of a sign or something?), when the "Battery Low" notification appeared. The 770 immidiatly shut itself down, usually the "Charge Battery" notification appears first, but anyway... So I plugged the charger in, and.. OH MY GOD! THE WHITE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!! Along with the WSOD came a busted screen with nice vertical lines in the middle.

At that moment panic mode was being initiated inside my brain. I got frustrated. Extremely frustrated, I should say. I know there is nothing else to do than to send the faulty device back to Nokia to get a replacement. Which I guess can take a while, especially considering my past experience with UPS.

And reflashing the device won't help, sadly. It's a hardware problem and according to quite many users around the intarweb, a quite common one. So my advice to all kids out there: Don't do drugs, don't drink coffee, don't install Xgl on your Gentoo machine, and first and foremost of all: charge your battery in time, never shut your 770 off, get a life and whatever.

Wohoo, today I got myself a wireless router from Netgear, so now I can utilise my Nokia 770 to the full extent here at home. I'm actually writing this from my 770, sitting in a place where the smell is not that great at all times... I will leave it up to any eventual reader to figure out what that place may be. :D

The delays made me happy later than expected

So, what the title is all about is the fact that UPS (United Parcel Service), who was supposed to deliver my Nokia 770, really screwed up. Not once, not twice, not.. Well, I've lost count of how many times they screwed up. First, they sent it to the wrong shipping terminal, then they sent it to the right one, then they sent it back to the first terminal (!), then back to the right one again, but then they forgot to deliver it, and so on etc etc...

And I called the customer service, over and over and over again. And they bounced me back and forth with different answers each time I asked "Where's my package?". So, on Tuesday I was quite angry/annoyed/dissappointed at them, so my step-father came to the rescue by calling UPS's country manager here in Sweden, and told him the whole story. Then things started rolling. The manager called the shipping terminal and made them ship my package with another shipping company. Within 2 hours, my Nokia 770 got delivered. Finally!

So, all I can say is that I really don't recommend UPS to anyone, not even my worst enemies (if I had any).

And about the Nokia 770... It rocks hard! Thanks Nokia for making this absolutely wonderful device.

But Nokia, you should really consider giving UPS a long, hard, painful spanking session.

Monday will be a good day

Because my Nokia 770 will arrive that day!

I ordered it on Wednesday, and chose the Express delivery option, so it should have arrived this Friday, but two things happened:

1. Nokia didn't send it out until Thursday, why is beyond my understanding.
2. The shipping company (UPS), sorted it to the wrong destination when it was in Germany.

So the Express delivery option, which is advertised as 1 day on the Nokia site, didn't really work as expected. So the extra price (€10), didn't do any difference at all. Which is my I'm going to call Nokia to have a refund.

Anyway, I've also bought a Kingston 1GB MMCMobile memory, hope it will work on the 770... It's RS-MMC, and dual voltage, so it should work. But I've seen that the 770 uses 1.8V and 3V, while the Kingston memory uses 1.8V and 3.3V, so I'm a little bit worried about that. We'll see how it works out...
